How to Become a Foster Parent in 3 Simple Steps

Many of us have a special place in our hearts for children who lack a loving home’s safety and stability. Through no fault of their own, hundreds of thousands of American kids have entered state care, where they will stay for an average of 1.5 years.

But, most adults who would like to help have no idea how to get started.

That’s why we’ve broken down the process for becoming a foster parent into three simple steps.

Who Can Become a Foster Parent?

The path to becoming a foster parent begins with an orientation. Sign up for a local information session and attend the event to receive some initial guidance and paperwork to start the process officially.

You will have to submit to an inspection of your home to ensure that it represents a safe, sound environment to raise a child. In addition to dozens of other requirements, which you can find online, your home must have:

  • a working phone number

  • screens on the windows

  • a one-week supply of perishable food

  • a two-week supply of dry goods

  • a lock on the garage and medicine cabinet

  • no clutter and a room for the child

Why Become a Foster Parent?

Becoming a foster parent improves the life of a child in need and provides an opportunity for your own personal growth. The training that applicants go through will enhance your skill set, making you a more well-rounded individual.

How Do I Become a Foster Parent?

Throughout the qualification process, applicants must finish 20 to 30 hours of foster parent training to learn about the system and how to raise a foster child. Part of this will include earning your CPR certification and having every member of your household pass a criminal background check.

As soon as you have the foster care license in hand, you can start mentally preparing yourself to become a foster parent and welcome a new member of the family into your home.
