Writing a Brighter Future: Students Assemble Pencil Packs for Foster Youth

Shoutout to Reese Woods and the Olympic Heights Lions Chapter of STUDENTS Speak Up for Kids

By turning simple supplies into symbols of support, students helped foster youth feel seen and valued. At Olympic Heights, students came together to assemble 48 pencil packs to support children in foster care, offering not just tools for learning, but messages of encouragement, motivation, and hope.

With 19 students participating and a combined 22 hours of service contributed, the project was a powerful example of how young people can make a meaningful impact right in their own community.

"I believe that encouraging students to help foster youth through community service helps them feel more connected to those who are struggling," shared Reese Woods. "This helps develop their sense of empathy as well as their skills in advocacy."

Why This Matters

For many students in foster care, basic school supplies aren't a given. A pencil pack may seem small, but it can help a child feel more prepared, more confident, and less alone. It's a reminder that someone cares and that their education matters.

"Even those items which many deem basic or little in value can have a large impact on the lives of students with less."

"Looking at the filled bags following the club meeting made me feel that our chapter could truly help others," said Reese.

Get Involved

"This club is an amazing opportunity to help children in your community and learn about the Palm Beach County foster care system," Reese added.

Whether it’s through assembling supply packs or simply raising awareness, there’s always a way to lend a hand - and help write a brighter future.
