The definition of positivity means the practice of being optimistic in attitude. Thinking positively means not letting fearful, depressing, or angry thoughts take over your awareness. It’s isn’t about ignoring problems or pretending everything is perfect, it’s about choosing a mindset that helps you cope, grow, and stay motivated.

Say No to the Negative

It’s important to remind yourself of the difference between good thoughts and bad thoughts. The bad thoughts that pop into your head are normal; everyone gets them, but sadly, they can control your life if you choose to listen to them (often reflected through living in fear and/or being unkind to others).

Some common influences that can cause negative thinking are:

  • scary movies

  • pornography

  • exposure to violence

  • discomforting situations

  • lack of sleep and/or healthy foods

  • stress and anger

With practice, you’ll start to notice when you are thinking negatively. Always approach your thoughts with kindness and understanding before ever trying to remove them. They are there for a reason, hence the importance of understanding their presence. Once you’ve done so, however, begin to revert your mind to gratitude or positivity. Factors that will work against this practice include negative influences like people, movies, apps, and books.

Surround Yourself with the Good

“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.” -Willie Nelson.

If you bring good, positive things to you, then you’ll start to feel much happier and you’ll attract the good things in life, producing success and joy throughout your years. Though life can’t be happy all the time, it’s important to always look forward and make the best out of what you have.

Key tips to help invite joy and positivity into your life:

  • Listening to positive music that has a good message

  • Watching movies that bring joy and laughter

  • Reading wholesome books

  • Spending time with people who make you feel loved and valued

Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude is such an important role in everyday life. Spending just a few minutes each morning writing down five to ten things you're grateful for can noticeably boost your mood and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. You can start to shift your problems into opportunities as you work hard for what you want in life. Have goals, dream big, and expect the best of yourself! Even just smiling and laughing brings the joyful hormones into your body and helps your mood, mind, heart, and soul.

Believe in the Best

Visualizing what you want in life is another great way to attract positivity. Meditate and picture yourself succeeding in whatever your goals are. Whether it’s imagining yourself and your children running joyfully in a beautiful flower field, climbing Mount Everest, or becoming the manager of your company, it’s important to ensure that these goals are truly what you want and that you’re willing to work for them. Picturing what you want and believing that you can one day receive it is what unlocks your full potential.

Tell yourself:

  • “I am capable”

  • “I am enough”

  • “Today is going to be a good day”

Final Thoughts

Don’t let fear take over your life, and don’t let anything negative take a hold of you. Crying, screaming, and getting frustrated are normal reactions when you can’t hold it in any longer and are even healthy. But what makes the difference is choosing to be positive afterwards, picking yourself up again, and always doing your best. You got this!
