A Chapter to Remember: Lions Spread Joy Through Literary Gifts
Shoutout to Reese Woods and the Olympic Heights Lions Chapter of STUDENTS Speak Up for Kids
In their latest act of generosity, the Olympic Heights Lions brought stories, inspiration, and heartfelt messages to children in foster care through their Literary Letters project. The chapter collected 17 donated books and crafted 41 handmade bookmarks, offering each child not just something to read—but a reminder that someone cares.
With 20 students involved and a total of 40 service hours contributed, the in-person project combined donation, creativity, and advocacy. Whether given alongside the books or shared on their own, the bookmarks carried messages of encouragement and hope meant to uplift young readers.
"Donating items with sentimental value, like your past favorite books, helps you realize how lucky you are to have experienced all the joys of this world," said Reese Woods. "This realization is a great motivator to share those joys with others."
Why This Matters
The books and bookmarks are more than simple gifts—they’re bridges to imagination, comfort, and connection. For children in foster care, receiving a beloved story or thoughtful note can offer a sense of stability and belonging.
"The literary inspiration we take for granted in our childhood may make a real difference in another person’s life."
A Moment That Made a Difference
Reese described a special moment during the meeting: "When overseeing the meeting, I witnessed the joy the members felt sharing their favorite books with foster youth. Then, I could not help but feel that this joy will be felt by those who receive the project."
Get Involved
"This club is an amazing opportunity to serve your community and hone individual skills through advocating and completing projects for foster youth."
Whether it’s a favorite childhood book or a handmade bookmark, every contribution to this project added up to something meaningful, proving that kindness, when shared, creates lasting chapters in the lives of others.
