Overview
Replacing your driver’s license or ID card is important if it has been lost, stolen, or requires an update. Most states allow you to renew your license online, but you may need to renew it in person at a DMV office if your previous license has expired, important information has changed, or you’re applying for a REAL ID. Check with your state’s DMV, as regulations vary by state. However, the following are the documents you’ll generally need when renewing your license or ID:
Primary Identification
You’ll need one of the following original documents showing your complete name:
U.S. birth certificate (issued by a county health department or the CDC)
Valid U.S. passport or passport card
Consular Report of Birth Abroad
Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
Proof of Social Security
Bring an original document showing your complete name and Social Security number (SSN), such as:
Social Security card
W-2 form
Paycheck or pay stub
SSA-1099 form
Any 1099 form
Proof of Residential Address
You’ll need two different documents showing your residential address. These may include:
Deed, mortgage, or residential rental/lease agreement
Voter registration card
Utility bill (dated within the last 60 days)
Automobile payment booklet
Selective Service card
Medical or health card with your address
Current homeowner’s or automobile insurance policy
Educational institution transcript
Unexpired professional license
Form DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status)
Letter from a homeless shelter or transitional service provider, accompanied by a Certification of Address form
Mail from financial institutions or government agencies
For subsequent renewals, you may not need to provide these documents unless your information has changed. However, for Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLP) or Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL), you’ll need to provide proof of residence.
Name Changes
If you’ve legally changed your name, bring the original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Allow 24 to 48 hours after updating your name with the Social Security Administration before applying for a driver’s license.
Final Thoughts
Remember to bring all required documents and allow enough time for processing. With the correct paperwork, renewing your driver’s license can be a smooth and straightforward process.
