National Foster Care, Speak Up for Kids, and Guardian ad Litem Month

Gregg Weiss, PBC Commissioner, signing the proclamation

May is National Foster Care, Speak Up for Kids, and Guardian ad Litem Month for vulnerable children in Palm Beach County, FL. We celebrate all of our advocates and the impacts they have made on child welfare. The children we serve often do not have family members to lean on, so we are their full support system.

Guardian ad Litem and Speak Up for Kids

The Palm Beach County Guardian ad Litem program is a partnership of trained children advocates, case coordinators, and professional attorneys who are appointed by the court to represent abandoned, abused, and neglected children. It has helped so many find their way through the complex social service and legal system. Following these children throughout their stay in the foster care system is what strengthens their mental health and allows them to get out of their cycle of abuse.

Guardian ad Litem is a state program and unfortunately was always running at a deficit. The nonprofit organization Speak Up for Kids was developed out of a need to provide 100% advocacy for the 1,000 foster children in Palm Beach County who needed an advocate in the courtroom and in life. This costs approximately $100,000 per year. Speak Up for Kids is the exclusive fundraising arm for Guardian ad Litem.

CASA and Guardian ad Litem Work Together

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) work with the Guardian ad Litem program to voice the child’s best interests in court. Together, CASA and Guardian ad Litem aim to find each child a permanent home, whether it be back with their original family or with adoptive parents.

If you feel it in your heart to support us, donate today! Each donation helps us to support Guardian ad Litem and gives every child a safe place to call home.
